In a busy everyday life, not everyone has the time or interest to set aside several hours for brewing their own beer. And perhaps extract kits give a slight, inexplicable off-flavour you never quite make friends with? Then our Fresh Wort Kits are a practical and incredibly simple solution!
What is a Fresh Wort Kit?
A fresh wort kit is a wonderfully simple alternative to extract kits, and at the same time gives a much better result. The kits you get from Brewshop consist of 20 litres of finished wort in a bag-in-box, yeast, and any dry hops or other additions where they are part of the recipe.
Our Fresh Wort Kits are professionally brewed by Austmann and Amundsen Bryggeri, two of Norway's leading microbreweries. The wort should not be topped up with water, is precisely water-adjusted to give favourable fermentation conditions and perfect flavours, and is completely ready to use. By not adding extra water at home, you avoid any shortcomings from insufficient or incorrect water adjustment. You also avoid unnecessary risk of contaminating the beer.
Our kits are packed on a professional filling machine, where the wort is hot-filled into a vacuum-sealed bag and then flushed with nitrogen to remove oxygen. This gives you the best wort on the market, fresh and with a good shelf life.
In other words, this is pure wort brewed by some of the best in the business, and in no way a concentrate that has to be diluted with water.
What equipment do I need to brew a fresh wort kit?
A fresh wort kit is a very easy way to brew real craft beer, and you need very little equipment to get started.
Here is a completely basic setup:
- 25 litre fermenting bucket with tap and bottle filler (for fermentation, and transfer to bottles after fermentation)
- Star San or Chemipro San (sanitiser)
- Capper, caps and bottles
- Carbonation drops (dextrose in pre-measured amounts for bottles)
- Hydrometer (to check that the beer has finished fermenting before you bottle it)
How do you «brew» beer with a Fresh Wort Kit?
The instructions included with every kit are written so that anyone can brew, regardless of previous homebrewing experience. Here is the process in brief:
- Fermentation
- Fill the fermenting bucket with a litre of cold water and add Star San / Chemipro San sanitiser according to the dosage on the bottle.
- Put the lid on and shake well.
- Empty the bucket – it is now sanitised and ready to use.
- Sanitise the tap on the bag-in-box and empty the wort into the fermenting bucket.
- Sprinkle the included yeast over the top
- Fit the lid firmly on the fermenting bucket, fit the airlock and fill it with water or Star San solution.
- Leave the fermenting bucket at the right temperature for the number of days stated in the instructions.
- Bottling
- When the beer has finished fermenting, it is time to bottle. Use the hydrometer towards the end of the fermentation period to check whether the beer has fully fermented. The instructions tell you what it should read when it is finished (FG, Final Gravity).
- Mix up sanitiser and immerse the bottles, caps and bottle filler in it.
- Fit the bottle filler and fill the bottles.
- Put one carbonation drop in each bottle and cap it. Use a sanitised glove so the beer is not contaminated with bacteria from your hand.
- Leave the bottles at room temperature for a week or two to carbonate, then move them somewhere cool, ready to enjoy.
If you want to make it even easier, we recommend transferring the beer to a cornelius keg instead of bottles. You then carbonate quickly and precisely with CO2 and serve straight from the keg. We have put together two simple starter packs with everything you need, whether you want to use bottles or a keg:
Startsett Basic - an affordable starter kit for brewing with a Fresh Wort Kit or extract kit.
Simply Brew - a complete starter kit with equipment for fermenting a Fresh Wort Kit and carbonating in a keg. Our clear recommendation, as we guarantee you will quickly tire of washing, filling and capping bottles.
