Description
Hydrometer 0.990–1.160 SG – triple scale for beer, cider, wine and mead
This hydrometer is a practical measuring tool for homebrewing and fermentation. It measures the specific gravity of wort, must or mead, so you can follow the fermentation and work out the approximate alcohol content.
The hydrometer has three scales: SG 0.990–1.160, Brix 0–35 and potential alcohol 0–20 %. The wide range makes it well suited to strong worts, must and mead with a lot of sugar, as well as regular beer.
Features
- Suitable for beer, cider, wine and mead
- Triple scale: SG, Brix and potential alcohol
- Made of glass
Technical data
- Product: Triple Scale Hydrometer
- Material: glass
- Length: 280 ± 10 mm
- SG range: 0.990–1.160
- Brix range: 0–35
- Potential alcohol range: 0–20 %
How to use the hydrometer
- Clean and sanitize the hydrometer and the test jar.
- Fill the test jar with a sample of wort or must, and cool the sample to room temperature.
- Lower the hydrometer gently into the sample and give it a small spin to release air bubbles.
- Read the scale at the surface of the liquid.
Frequently asked questions about the hydrometer
How do I calculate the alcohol content?
Measure the gravity before fermentation (OG) and when fermentation is finished (FG). The alcohol content is roughly (OG − FG) × 131.25. Example: OG 1.050 and FG 1.010 give about 5.3 %.
What is the potential alcohol scale for?
It shows how much alcohol the sugar in the wort or must can produce if it ferments out completely. You read it before fermentation starts. It is especially useful for wine, cider and mead.
How do I know fermentation is finished?
When the hydrometer shows the same reading two or three days in a row, fermentation is finished. It is then safe to bottle or keg.
Why should the sample be at room temperature?
Warm liquid has a lower density, so the reading will be too low. Cool the sample before you measure.
Can I use a refractometer instead?
A refractometer works well for measuring wort before fermentation. Once fermentation has started, the alcohol throws off the refractometer reading. A hydrometer is then the reliable choice.
