Description
Blichmann HopRocket – hopback, hop infuser and inline filter
The HopRocket from Blichmann Engineering is a heavy-duty hopback and hop infuser in stainless steel. As a hopback it is connected between the brew kettle and the fermenter, so the hot wort flows through whole hops and picks up the volatile aroma compounds in a closed system. It can also be used as a hop infuser (Randalizer) in your draft system, and as an inline filter.
Features
- Pressure-tight, for operation up to 40 psi (approx. 2.8 bar)
- Holds up to 3 oz (approx. 85 g) of whole hops as a hopback and 4 oz (approx. 113 g) as an infuser
- All stainless steel construction with silicone seals
- Cannot overflow, so there is no need to monitor the wort level
- Fully enclosed from kettle to fermenter, so no volatile hop aromas are lost
- Bottom inlet lets air purge automatically and reduces hot-side aeration
- Fine filter with wiper seal sends very clear wort to the fermenter
- Coarse filter and cone-bottom inlet prevent channelling and back-up for even hop utilisation
- Can be filled with up to 3 oz (approx. 85 g) of rice hulls for use as an inline filter
- Works with gravity and with pumps. For gravity use, about 1 metre of static head is recommended
- 1/2" NPT connections, a match for Blichmann QuickConnector fittings (1/2" and 3/8" barb and 1/4" flare)
- A mounting kit for the Blichmann TopTier brewing stand is available as an accessory
Important note on filtering
The HopRocket can be used as a strainer and filter, but it is not designed to remove all the sediment from your kettle when used as a hopback. Large quantities of pellet hops, trub and other debris will eventually clog the hop bed and stop the flow. Use a pre-filter in the kettle. Filling the HopRocket with rice hulls greatly increases its filtering capability.
Frequently asked questions about the Blichmann HopRocket
What is a hopback?
A hopback is a vessel filled with hops that the hot wort flows through on its way from the kettle to the chiller and fermenter. It adds plenty of hop aroma with little extra bitterness.
Can I use pellet hops in the HopRocket?
The HopRocket is designed for whole hops. Large quantities of pellet hops and trub will clog the hop bed, so use a pre-filter in the kettle.
Can the HopRocket be used in a draft system?
Yes. It works as a hop infuser (Randalizer), where the beer flows through hops on its way to the tap.
Do I need a pump?
No, the HopRocket works with both gravity and pumps. For gravity use, about 1 metre of static head is recommended.
