Description
Carbonation calculator – find the right CO2 pressure for your beer
Carbonation calculator from KeyKeg that works out the amount of CO2 in beer from CO2 pressure and temperature. It is a handy tool for anyone who carbonates with CO2, whether the beer goes into kegs, KeyKegs or tanks, and makes it easy to hit your target carbonation without looking up tables.
How to use the calculator
- Find the temperature the beer is held at during carbonation.
- Read off the pressure that gives the CO2 level you want at that temperature.
- Set the CO2 regulator to that pressure and leave the beer until it is saturated.
Maximum CO2 in a KeyKeg
The maximum amount of CO2 for beer in a KeyKeg is:
- KeyKeg Baseline: 5.1 g/l (2.5 vol. CO2)
- KeyKeg Slimline: 7.1 g/l (3.5 vol. CO2)
Frequently asked questions about the carbonation calculator
Why does temperature matter?
Cold beer holds more CO2 than warm beer. At a higher temperature you therefore need more pressure to reach the same carbonation.
What is the difference between g/l and volumes of CO2?
Both measure how much CO2 is dissolved in the beer. As the KeyKeg figures show, 1 volume of CO2 is roughly 2 grams per litre.
Can I use the calculator without KeyKegs?
Yes. The relationship between pressure, temperature and CO2 applies to any container, but the KeyKeg limits above apply to KeyKegs only.
