Kegs and CO2 – corny kegs, keg kits and CO2 equipment for draught beer
Here you will find what you need to store, carbonate and serve beer from kegs: AEB corny kegs in 9, 12, 19, 20 and 23 litres, ready-made keg kits, 2 and 4 kg CO2 cylinders, SodaStream cylinders, Oxyturbo CO2 regulators, manifolds, CO2 cartridges and a 5-litre mini keg.
How to get started with kegs and CO2
To serve beer from a keg you need a keg, a CO2 cylinder, a regulator, a gas line and a beer line with ball lock disconnects, and a tap. The keg kits bring all of this together:
- Keg kit with SodaStream 425 g comes with a 12, 20 or 23-litre keg. It includes an Oxyturbo regulator with John Guest 5/16" fitting, a beer line kit with 3/16" anti-foam line and picnic tap, a CO2 line kit and a cylinder stand. See the keg kit with 20-litre keg, also available with two kegs.
- 20-litre corny keg kit has a single-outlet Oxyturbo regulator and a 2 kg CO2 cylinder from Welz Gas. The cylinder is emptied before shipping.
- Three-keg packs in 19, 20 or 23 litres, without CO2 equipment, if you already have a regulator.
A good starting point is to carbonate at 1 bar for about a week at 4 °C. The carbonation table shows the pressure for different beer styles, and the blog (in Norwegian) explains how to carbonate beer in a keg.
Choosing a CO2 cylinder and regulator
| CO2 source | Regulator | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| SodaStream 425 g | Oxyturbo Minimal or Minor | One keg in the fridge |
| 2 kg CO2 cylinder | Oxyturbo Major, one outlet | Permanent setup with one keg |
| 4 kg CO2 cylinder | Oxyturbo MajorPlus, two outlets with separate pressure | Two kegs at different pressures |
| 16 g threaded CO2 cartridges | CO2 Picnic Regulator with gauge | Mini kegs and trips |
The Oxyturbo Minimal screws straight onto SodaStream and AGA cylinders and delivers up to 5.5 bar. To run several kegs from one cylinder, a CO2 manifold with two or four outlets distributes the gas, and the Oxyturbo manifolds have a ball valve and check valve on each outlet. Always keep the cylinder upright while the regulator is connected, otherwise liquid CO2 can freeze the gauge. Filled 2 kg and 4 kg cylinders cannot be sent as ordinary parcels. Choose an empty cylinder for delivery, or ship as dangerous goods on a pallet.
Food-grade CO2 refills in Trondheim
In our Trondheim shop we refill food-grade CO2 with 99.9 % purity, which Brewshop has offered to consumers since 2017. Both the gas and the cylinders we fill from are food-grade approved under the requirements of the Norwegian Food Safety Authority, and cylinders are labelled at every refill. See CO2 refill. Store empty cylinders with the valve closed, so moisture and oxygen do not cause rust inside.
More than corny kegs
- PolyKeg PRO are one-way kegs with bag in 12, 20, 24 and 30 litres, with K valve (KK coupler).
- Project Brew 5L Mini Keg is vacuum-insulated stainless steel with CO2 regulator and Picnic Tap 2.1, for draught beer at the cabin or a party.
- FLOTit 2.0 is a floating dip tube that draws beer from the top of the keg, so you avoid sediment in the first glasses.
- Beer Gas cartridges with 70 % nitrogen and 30 % CO2 give creamy stout and porter.
- KegMaster KS1 KegScale weighs the keg and shows how much beer is left, and the Mark II Keg Washer cleans kegs and fermenters.
Frequently asked questions about kegs and CO2
What do I need to start kegging beer?
A corny keg, a CO2 cylinder with regulator, gas and beer line kits with ball lock disconnects, and a tap. A keg kit contains all of this, so you only need beer and a fridge.
Can I use a SodaStream cylinder for draught beer?
Yes. The Oxyturbo Minimal and Minor fit SodaStream and AGA cylinders directly. To use a standard regulator with W21.8 threads, you need a SodaStream adapter.
How long does it take to carbonate beer in a keg?
At 1 bar and 4 °C, beer is normally carbonated after about a week. Higher pressure gives more carbonation. The carbonation table shows the right pressure for different styles and temperatures.
Can a filled CO2 cylinder be shipped?
Not as an ordinary parcel. Filled 2 kg and 4 kg cylinders are shipped empty, or as dangerous goods on a pallet. Cylinders can be refilled in our Trondheim shop.
What is the difference between CO2 and Beer Gas?
CO2 is used for most beer styles. Beer Gas is a mix of 70 % nitrogen and 30 % CO2 that gives small bubbles and a creamy head, used for stout and porter.
