Frequently asked questions about Strisselspalt
What aroma does Strisselspalt give?
Strisselspalt gives a fine aroma of citrus, bergamot, grapefruit and orange, with notes ranging from cream and caramel to spice. In a cold infusion, red berries such as blackcurrant, camomile blossom and tea also come through.
What can I use instead of Strisselspalt?
Mount Hood, Crystal and Hersbrucker are alternative hops with a related, mild profile.
How high is the alpha acid in Strisselspalt?
BarthHaas gives a typical range of 1.8–2.5% for the variety. Alpha acid varies from year to year. The alpha acid for the lot you receive is stated in the product title. Use that figure when calculating bitterness.
How should I store the hops?
Store the hops cold, dark and airtight, preferably in a freezer. We keep our hops vacuum-packed in a freezer room at −18 °C, and the quality holds for several years. We prioritise hops from the two most recent harvests, but older hops can be just as good if stored correctly. Read more in the article on hop shelf life and storage from Yakima Valley Hops (PDF).
